I’d like to share with you a
fantastic and unbelievable event which my guide Colby Simms
and I experienced during our last muskie fishing trip. I
planned this trip a month in advance, because October is my
favorite month. A week prior to my trip, Sue (my dear wife)
checked her favorite and ‘only truthful’ weather forecaster-
Old Farmers Almanac, and after watching TV she gave me
advise: stormy, rainy weather is coming. Well, being an old
hard headed Czech, I replaced old lines with brand new
fluorocarbon and selected lures for fall muskie hunting. I
was ready to go. The Almanac and Weatherman were right. A
big storm was approaching, all the way from southwest
Oklahoma to northeast Illinois. We started fishing early on
Wednesday, Oct. 22nd, begging the Heavens for a
delay. And they did. What happened after 10:00 A.M. is
almost impossible to describe and never will be forgotten.
(I read a long time ago that with approaching storm and
barometric pressure dropping, muskies are going nuts, and it
happened that day).
Within the next seven
hours we boated 9 Muskies, sizes 1-46.5”, 1-42”,
2-39”, 3-36”, 1-20”, and
one very beautiful, shiny
silvery baby with about 3/8” dia dark blue spots, 14” long.
Next day the storm was in, we fished for a couple of hours
and caught three muskies, and lost another one. About 10:45
A.M, we were speeding (soaked) toward the ramp. The first
picture shows 46.5 incher and my happy face. The fish kicked
twice so hard that
I almost ended in water. I had to sit down and my face
reflects ‘seriousness’ of that moment.
This year my wife and I
experienced the very best fishing we’ve ever had. We were
guided by Colby Simms of Simms Outdoors on beautiful Kinkaid
Lake. Amazingly, we caught 103 bass in a single day! We also
caught 11 other fish including a big crappie, the biggest
walleye we’ve ever seen and three muskies all in just one
incredible day with Colby! The bass averaged about 2 ½
pounds and we ended up with seventeen over 4 pounds, seven
of which were over 5 pounds. Kathy caught her second biggest
to date, a 6 ¾ pound largemouth and I landed my biggest, a
trophy that weighed just over 8 pounds! We caught all of our
fish on Colby’s Big’un bass spinnerbaits. What a day, we
can’t wait to get back.
Kinkaid has always been
my favorite bass lake. I fish it with Colby Simms and his
guides of Simms Outdoors and have always had good fishing
trips there with them. The biggest bass that I’ve caught
while fishing with Simms Guides has been 7 and 7 ¾ pounds,
and the most bass caught in one day was 114. Colby and his
guides have taught me a lot about bass fishing techniques
and how to fish Kinkaid which has helped me to win money in
tournaments on Kinkaid and other lakes. Kinkaid is one of
the prettiest places you could ever see and the fishing is
better than any lake I’ve fished across the country. I
highly recommend guided trips with Simms Outdoors.
My 7 year old son has a goal
of catching, photographing and releasing every fresh water
fish in the Midwest and a musky was the next one on his
list. After an internet search I was able to “hook up” with
Colby Simms and we booked an October fishing trip on Lake
Kinkaid. Colby was very prompt in his e-mails and he
answered all my questions prior to the trip. I really
enjoyed the fishing tips and the great conversation with
Colby while on the boat. Colby was patient and extremely
interactive with my very talkative and excited son which I
really appreciated! The day was beautiful and we would have
been happy not catching a big musky, but I was able to hook,
boat, photograph and then release a monster (with Colby’s
and Drew’s help): We are already looking forward to booking
a couple more trips with Colby to beautiful Lake Kinkaid!
