LAGUNA MADRE, TX
Sport fishing report for 07-27-07
From: SIMMS OUTDOORS L.L.C.
& the SIMMS OUTDOORS TEAM
The inshore and offshore fishing in the Laguna Madre region of south Texas rates fair to excellent for several species at this time.
Redfish fishing has been excellent for anglers drifting or wading the flats. Shallow flats from knee to waist deep with grass have been the most productive spots. The best shallow flats don’t lie far from the deep channels. The best presentation option has been fishing 1/8oz chartruse jigs paired with trout killers and other soft plastic jerkbait type lures. The best color has been a white lure with a chartruse tail and brown back. A few fish have also been taken on topwater baits like spit n images. Citrus shad has been a good color pattern.
Speckled trout fishing has been fair. Wading the flats has been the best option. The deeper flats have been producing best. Anglers fishing in water from above the waist up to chest deep and casting out toward deeper waters have been catching the most trout. Spit n images and other similar topwater baits have produced fish. Jigs paired with plastic shrimp and soft jerkbaits, and small spoons have taken the occasional fish too. White baits with a red head have been best on the trout.
The red snapper have been tearing it up offshore. Limits of big fish are common for anglers anchoring on rock humps. Cut chucks of baitfish and squid are producing the snapper on simple bottom rigs.
King mackerel have been hit and miss. Some large kings have been caught, but action has been sporadic. Whole dead baitfish rigged weightless and allowed to drift has been the best presentation for the kings. Minnowbaits like long a magnums and a-salts are also a good choice for kings in white and sliver patterns with a red head. The best places to fish have been in moderate depths around shrimp boats.
Big jacks have been showing up too. The action has been taking place the most in moderate depth areas along the jetties. The outside portion of the jetties has been the best spot. Jigs paired with soft plastics have tempted some big fish.
Extra strong and highly sensitive inshore and offshore saltwater rods from All Star Graphite Rods (www.allstarrods.com) and Shakespeare Fishing Tackle are best for going toe to toe with powerful saltwater fish. Top quality reels with super smooth drag systems like those from Pflueger Fishing Tackle (www.pfluegerfishing.com) and Penn are the perfect saltwater compliment to these great rods when paired with a strong monofilament line with low stretch and high abrasion resistance like Supreme Super Tough or Shakespeare Ugly Braid (www.shakespeare-fishing.com).
Tarpon, snook, ladyfish, flounder, grouper, wahoo, sharks and sailfish are just some of the other options in or near the Laguna Madre at this time of year. Top quality polarized sunglasses designed for fishing like the Master Angler Series from Flying Fisherman (www.flyingfisherman.com), and high performance floating tools designed for fishing like Advanced Lightweight Tools from X Tools (www.xtools.us) are critical items to have along on fishing trips. Real Tree Camouflage Patterns (www.realtree.com) are a vital part of our hunting success when we’re off the water.
